Grace: A Real Life Example

At my last job, they would take nominations for employee of the month. I told myself I didn't care about such a meaningless award, but every month I scoured the nominations for my name. I was surprised how disappointed and underappreciated I felt when my name consistently failed to appear.

After over a year of self pity, I realized I could actually nominate someone else. My self-centeredness had blinded me from this simple possibility. I nominated my new supervisor, who had no previous management experience and I could tell was a bit nervous. When my positive feedback was anonymously posted in front of the whole department, it felt ten times better knowing I made someone else feel appreciated than it would have felt to win myself.

This small shift in thinking was Grace--I once was blind, but now I see! I did nothing to earn it, but when I tried to be open to it, it came.
